Class 6 · Unit 0: Getting to know the laptop · Lesson 0.4 · 40 min
Sit well, find home
The rabab teacher wouldn't let Adil play for a whole week. "First, learn to sit." Typing starts the same way.
Today you will: Sit like a typist — five checks · Find the home row with your eyes closed · Type your first real words
Story
When Adil started learning the rabab, his ustad did not let him play for a whole week.
Teacher: “First, learn to sit. Then learn where your fingers live. Music comes after.” (the ustad.)
Typing is the same. Before speed, we learn how to sit and where our fingers live. Their home is called the home row.
Watch
Sit well, find home, — scan code 6.0.4 in the printed book.
Warm up your fingers
Close your eyes. Find the bumps on F and J with your first fingers. Open your eyes. Are your fingers in the right place? Do it 5 times.
On the laptop
Mission 1: Sit well (pairs, 4 min)
- ☐1
Posture check with your partner — back, feet, elbows, wrists, eyes. Your partner says "✓" for each one.
Mission 2: Home row (alone, 10 min)
- ☐2
Open Notepad. Fingers on the home row, thumbs on the Space bar.
- ☐3
Predict: which finger will find its key hardest? Then type each line 3 times, pressing Enter after each:
fff jjj fff jjj ddd kkk ddd kkk sss lll sss lll aaa ;;; aaa ;;; asdf jkl; asdf jkl; - ☐4
Now the words:
sad lad dad fall all ask flask - ☐5
Save as home-row in your AI-work folder.
- ☐6
Stand up, stretch, and look out of the window for 20 seconds.
No laptop today?
Lay the paper keyboard your teacher gives you flat. Fingers on the home row. Your teacher reads letters aloud; you press the paper keys with your eyes on the board.
Now you know
- Sit well: back straight, feet flat, wrists floating, eyes level with the screen.
- The home row is A S D F and J K L ;. The bumps on F and J help you find home without looking.
- Every finger has its own keys. It goes out to press one and comes back home.
- Eyes on the screen. Slow at first — fastest in the end.
- Rest your eyes every 20 minutes.
Debate it
Using a laptop for a long time can hurt your back and eyes if you sit badly. What healthy habit will you keep when you use a phone or laptop at home?
