Class 6 · Unit project
Unit 2 project: Count it, chart it, check it
Your group becomes a data team. Pick something in school to count, build a neat table, draw a chart anyone can read — and check your own data before anyone trusts it.
The task
This unit you met five kinds of data, typed a table, drew a chart, built a class dataset and cleaned a messy one. Today your group does all of it on real data you collect yourselves — and the data is about things, never about people.
Work in groups of 3–4. One period. Everything goes in data-team-<group>.ods.
Choose what to count (3 min)
Pick one. Your teacher says where you may go:
- The school garden: how many chinar, willow, apple and other leaves can you find on the ground?
- Our classroom: how many books are on each shelf?
- The school yard: how many pieces of wet, dry and plastic rubbish are in each bin?
- The library: how many story books, science books and other books are on one table?
Collect and organise (15 min)
- Predict: which group of things will be the biggest? Write your guess at the top of your notebook page.
- Count carefully, with a tally in your notebook. One person counts, one person checks.
- In Calc, make the table: a heading row, then one row for each group of things.
- Add a Total at the bottom with
=SUM(...). - Save it with a good name in your
my-data-6folder.
Chart and check (12 min)
- Make a bar chart with a title — or a pictogram on squared paper with a key.
- Check your data: is any cell empty? Is any number impossible? Did you count anything twice? Fix what you can, and colour what you can't yellow.
- Where did it come from? Write one line under your table: who counted, when, and where.
- Was your prediction right?
Your own line (5 min, alone)
Each person writes two sentences: one thing your chart shows at a glance, and one thing it can't tell us. Sign with your roll number. This part is marked for you alone.
Share (5 min)
Hold up your chart. Can the class read the answer from it in five seconds?
How it is marked
Each row is marked 0–3. Rows 1–5 are for the whole group; row 6 is yours alone. Marks are private and never compared with anyone else's.
Total: 18. A small, careful dataset scores better than a big, messy one.
