Unit 4 project: The Class 5 safety guide
Next year's Class 5 are about to meet the laptop for the first time. Your group makes the guide you wish you'd had — safe, kind and true online.
The task
This unit you followed footprints, inspected permissions, rolled a passphrase, stopped a scary forward, redesigned a notice for Nani and wrote your first credit line. Now you teach it. Your group makes a one-page guide for Class 5 — the children who will sit at these laptops next.
Work in groups of 3–4. One period. Make it in LibreOffice Writer, or on chart paper.
Plan it (5 min)
- Predict: which rule will Class 5 find hardest to follow? Write it at the top of your plan.
- Choose a title a ten-year-old would read, like "Be a good neighbour online".
- Share out the five boxes — one or two each.
Make it (22 min)
Your guide has five boxes. Each box has one rule, one picture you draw, and one real example from this unit:
| Box | The rule | Your example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Footprints | Think before you post | What history and cookies are, and what clearing can't do |
| 2. Privacy | My data, my choice | One permission a game doesn't need, and why |
| 3. Passwords | Long, secret, never shared | How the dice make a passphrase — no real password, ever |
| 4. Stop – Check – Share | Kind and true | A pretend scary forward, and the three steps |
| 5. Credit | Say where it came from | A credit line for a fact about the chinar |
Then make it work for Class 5, as you did for Nani: big letters, the important thing first, simple words.
Check it (5 min)
- The privacy check. Read your guide together. Is there any real name, photo, phone number, address or password on it? If yes, take it out.
- The Nani check. Read one box aloud to someone who hasn't seen it. Could they follow it by listening alone?
Your own line (5 min, alone)
Each person writes one sentence to a Class 5 child: what to do if someone is unkind to them online. Sign with your roll number. This part is marked for you alone.
Share (3 min)
Pin up the guides. Walk round and put a star beside one rule you'd most want Class 5 to remember.
How it is marked
Each row is marked 0–3. Rows 1–5 are shared by the group; row 6 is yours alone. Marks are returned privately and never compared with anyone else's.
Total: 18. Stars from the class are for fun and never count towards marks.
