Class 6 · Unit project
Unit 5 project: Teach the computer a school job
Pick one job your school does every day. Break it into steps, find the part that repeats, add an if-then — then hand it to another group and see if it works.
The task
This unit you broke a big job into small tasks, found the part of a pattern that repeats, left out the details that didn't matter, gave a program if-then rules, and hunted bugs. Today your group uses all five skills at once to teach a computer one real job from your school.
Work in groups of 3–4. One period. Build it in Scratch. Save as school-job-<group>.sb3.
Choose a job (3 min)
Pick one — things and routines only, never about a named person:
- The morning bell: ring 3 times, if it's a Friday ring once more.
- Watering the saplings: walk along the row, water each one — if it rained, skip it.
- The lunch line: each class goes in turn — if the bell rings, stop.
- Your own idea, approved by your teacher.
Plan it (10 min)
- Break it down: write the small steps on paper, one per line. Can one person do each step?
- Find the repeat: which steps happen again and again? That's your loop.
- Find the question: what does the job have to check? That's your if-then.
- Leave things out: cross out any detail that doesn't matter — the colour of the bell, who is tallest.
- Predict: how many blocks will your program need? Write the number.
Build it (12 min)
- In Scratch, build your program. A sprite can say each step, move along a row, or play a sound.
It must have at least one
repeatand oneif-then. - Run it. Does it do the job? Fix anything that's wrong.
Swap and hunt (8 min)
- Swap laptops with another group. Read their plan, predict what their program will do, then run it.
- Find one bug — or one step that's missing — and tell them. Hunt with the four steps: predict, run, spot, change one thing.
Your own line (4 min, alone)
Each person writes one sentence: "A computer could do this job, but a person should still ___, because ___." Sign with your roll number. This part is marked for you alone.
Share (3 min)
Each group shows its program running and says which bug the other group found.
How it is marked
Each row is marked 0–3. Rows 1–5 are shared by the group; row 6 is yours alone. Marks are returned privately and never compared with anyone else's.
Total: 18. A program with a bug that the group found and explained can still score full marks.
1. Small steps
- 0Missing
- 1A few big steps
- 2Small, clear steps in order
- 3Every step small enough for one person
2. The loop
- 0Missing
- 1A repeat, but the wrong part
- 2The repeating part is in a repeat
- 3And the group can say why it repeats
3. The if-then
- 0Missing
- 1A question, not in the program
- 2A working if-then
- 3An if-then that matches a real check in the job
4. Leaving out
- 0Nothing left out
- 1Some clutter left
- 2Only what matters kept
- 3And they can name one thing they left out, and why
5. Testing and fixing
- 0Not tested
- 1Tested, not fixed
- 2A bug found and fixed
- 3Predicted first, then fixed with one change
6. A person should still…
Just you- 0Missing
- 1Vague
- 2A clear job for a person
- 3A clear job, and the reason a machine can't do it
