Class 7 · Unit project
Unit 1 project: The mystery dataset
Your group gets a dataset with no instructions. Is it a job for classification, regression or clustering? Choose, build it, test it on rows you kept hidden — and prove it.
The task
This unit you sorted apples, followed a trend and found hidden groups — one at a time, with the technique already chosen for you. Today nobody tells you which one. Your group opens a mystery dataset and decides.
Work in groups of 3–4. One period. Everything in mystery-<letter>.ods.
Your dataset (from your teacher)
Each group gets one of these — you won't know which technique it needs until you look:
- Dataset P: 24 saffron flowers — petal length, colour score, and ready to pick: yes / no
- Dataset Q: 24 weeks — the week number and kilograms of apples a small orchard packed
- Dataset R: 24 songs — speed and loudness, with no names or labels at all
Build and test (25 min)
- Look first. What are the features? Is there a label column? Is the answer a group, a number, or groups nobody named?
- Choose the technique and write one sentence: "This is ___ because ___."
- Keep some back — before anything else. Move the last 6 rows to a new sheet called
Test. Don't look at them again until step 6. - Predict: how many of the 6 test rows will your model get right (or how close will it be)?
- Build it on the other 18 rows:
- classification → a rule, like Uncle's apple rule
- regression → a scatter chart with a trend line
- clustering → a scatter chart, clusters coloured and named by you
- Test it on the 6 hidden rows. Count the right answers, or work out each error. For clustering, place each new row in a cluster and say whether it fits.
Your own line (5 min, alone)
Each person writes two sentences: one thing the model does well, and one situation where it would go wrong. Sign with your roll number. This part is marked for you alone.
Share (5 min)
Each group says which dataset it had, which technique it chose, and its test result. Did the other groups with the same letter choose the same technique?
How it is marked
Each row is marked 0–3. Rows 1–5 are shared by the group; row 6 is yours alone. Marks are returned privately and never compared with anyone else's.
Total: 18. A model that fails its test and is explained honestly can score full marks.
1. The technique
- 0Missing
- 1Named, no reason
- 2Right technique, with a reason
- 3Right technique, reason uses label, number or similar
2. Keeping rows back
- 0Didn't
- 1Kept rows but used them
- 26 rows kept back before building
- 3Kept back first, and can say why it matters
3. The model
- 0Missing
- 1Started
- 2A working rule, trend line or clusters
- 3And it's explained so another group could use it
4. The test
- 0Missing
- 1Tried once or twice
- 2All 6 tested and counted
- 3Counted, compared with the prediction, and explained
5. Honesty
- 0Hid mistakes
- 1Mentioned them
- 2Named the mistakes
- 3Named them and said why they happened
6. Where it goes wrong
Just you- 0Missing
- 1Vague
- 2A real situation
- 3A real situation, and why the model can't see it coming
