Class 8 · Unit project
Unit 2 project: A sorter the school could use
Build a classifier for a real job in your school — then score it honestly, class by class, and decide if it should be AI at all.
The task
You've built a waste sorter, a better classifier, and a rule-based helper. Today your group builds a sorter for a real job in this school — and then asks the hardest question honestly: should this be AI at all?
Work in groups of 3. One period. Your plan and scores go in sorter-project.ods.
Choose a job (3 min)
Pick one real sorting job. Objects only — no people, no faces:
- The library returns shelf: story book / textbook / magazine
- The science lab: glass / plastic / metal equipment
- The school garden: chinar leaf / willow leaf / weed
- The canteen bin: wet / dry / hazardous
Plan (5 min)
- Three classes that don't overlap. Where will it be used? You'll photograph there.
- How you'll vary the photos: objects, backgrounds, light.
- Five test items per class, chosen now and kept out of training.
Build (12 min)
- Teachable Machine (no account): your three classes plus Background. About 30 varied photos each.
- Train it.
Score it honestly (12 min)
- Show each of the 15 held-back items once. Record what it really is · what the model said · right?
- Overall accuracy, then accuracy for each class.
- The mistake that matters most for this job — and why.
Decide (3 min)
- One line: learned model, rule-based helper, or a simple timer or sign — which does this job best, and why?
Your own line (5 min, alone)
Each person writes one sentence to the person who does this job now — the librarian, the lab assistant, the gardener: what the sorter could do for them, and the one thing they should never trust it with. Sign with your roll number. This part is marked for you alone.
How it is marked
Each row is marked 0–3. Rows 1–5 are shared by the group; row 6 is yours alone. Marks are returned privately and never compared with anyone else's.
Total: 18. A group that finds its sorter is worse than a simple sign — and says so — can score full marks.
