Class 9 · Unit project
Unit 2 project: One question, one honest screen
Take a messy file. Make it honest. Then put the answer to one real question on one screen — including what it can't tell you.
The task
Every lesson in this unit did one part of a single job: turn raw data into an answer someone can trust. Today your group does the whole job, start to finish, on one dataset.
Work in groups of 3–4. One period. Everything in honest-screen.ods.
Choose a dataset and a question (4 min)
Pick one:
- A.
mandi-prices-messy.ods(Lesson 2.3) — Which variety's price changed most this season? - B.
canteen-sales-messy.ods— two weeks of the canteen's daily sales, full of the usual faults — What should the canteen stock more of, and on which days? - C. Your own evidence from the Unit 1 project — the tap log, the bus times, the bin counts — if it has at least 20 rows and no names.
Write the question in cell A1 of the Dashboard sheet before you open the data.
Do the whole job (28 min)
- Audit (sheet Audit) — one line per column: needed? · who may see it? · what protects it? Delete what nobody needs.
- Clean (sheet Log) — hunt impossible values, mixed units and inconsistent labels. Log every change. Mark and leave out what you can't fix honestly.
- Choose — which two or three columns actually answer your question? Write one line on why, and one on what they leave out.
- Dashboard (sheet Dashboard) — the question · one input cell your reader can change · two or three figures that respond to it · one chart with its axis from 0 · one sentence of interpretation · one line: what this cannot tell you.
Your own line (5 min, alone)
Each person writes the one extra piece of data that would most improve the answer, where it would come from, and whether collecting it would raise a privacy problem. Sign with your roll number. This part is marked for you alone.
Show it (3 min)
Two groups swap screens. Each reads the other's dashboard in thirty seconds and says back what it means. If they can't, the dashboard isn't finished.
How it is marked
Each row is marked 0–3. Rows 1–5 are shared by the group; row 6 is yours alone. Marks are returned privately and never compared with anyone else's.
Total: 18. A plain dashboard that answers its question honestly beats a busy one that doesn't.
