The cycle and the three domains, revisited
It was 97% accurate. Then it marked Bilal absent three days running — while he sat at his desk.
Today you will: Name the 6 stages of the cycle · Sort any AI into its domain · Find where a failure really started
Story
The camera went up in the school corridor in September, and for six weeks it was the most admired thing in the building. Students walked past it and it marked them present. No register, no roll call. The company's man said it was 97% accurate.
97% — accurate — said the company's man, in September
In the first week of January it marked Bilal absent three days running. He had been at his desk every one of them.
Bilal: “It's broken.”
Hiba: “It isn't broken. Look at you.”
He is wearing what everyone wears in January: a pheran, a woollen cap pulled down to the eyebrows, a muffler up to the nose.
Hiba: “It learned our faces in September. Nobody showed it January.”

One cycle, three domains — — scan code 10.1.1 in the printed book.
Warm up your fingers
Skill: code symbols, at speed (5 min)
-
On typing.com: the symbols lessons.
-
Type three times, eyes on the screen:
stages = ["scoping", "acquisition", "exploration", "modelling", "evaluation", "deployment"] -
Goal this term: 38–44 WPM at 95%.
On the laptop
You need: LibreOffice Calc · domains-and-stages.ods
Mission 1: Twelve systems, three domains (10 min, in pairs)
- ☐1
Open sheet Systems. For each AI system ask: does it take in numbers, pictures or words? Write its domain in column B:
Statistical Data,CVorNLP. - ☐2
Three of them take in two kinds of input. Write both domains, and which one does the main work.
- ☐3
Predict: how many of the twelve are CV? Write it in F1. Then sort by column B and count.
Mission 2: Where did it go wrong? (10 min, in pairs)
- ☐4
Open sheet Failures: four AI projects that let people down. For each, fill Where it showed up · Where it started · The question nobody asked.
- ☐5
In at least two of the four, "showed up" and "started" should be different stages.
Mission 3: Your own cycle (3 min)
- ☐6
In
does-it-work.ods, add a column: Which stages did we actually do? Fill it for your Class 9 project.
Finished early?
Invent a system that uses all three domains at once. (Hint: a tourist's phone on Dal Lake.)
No laptop today?
Your teacher reads the twelve systems: show 1, 2 or 3 fingers for the domain. Then the four failure stories — write showed up and started on paper, and compare with the next pair.
Now you know
- Six stages, in a loop. Scoping → acquisition → exploration → modelling → evaluation → deployment — and back to scoping.
- Shows up late, starts early. The camera failed in January, at deployment. The mistake was made in September: data acquisition collected only September faces.
- Three domains, sorted by what goes in: numbers, pictures, or words.
- One system, two domains. A phone that reads an Urdu sign aloud in English: CV finds the words, NLP translates them.
- "97% accurate" — on what? Always ask: tested on what, and when? That is Unit 3.
Debate it
The school could retrain the camera with winter photos of every student.
- A face is personal data, and a child's needs a parent's consent. Would you ask the parents — and what would you say it was for?
- The paper register worked in every season. Was a camera ever the right answer?
Check yourself — practice, not a test
1. Put the six stages of the AI project cycle in order:
- 1. Modelling
- 2. Deployment
- 3. Data acquisition
- 4. Evaluation
- 5. Data exploration
- 6. Problem scoping
2. Match each system to its domain:
A forecast of tomorrow's apple prices from last year's mandi records · A drone photo that shows which orchard rows have scab · Automatic captions on a news video in Urdu · A camera that reads vehicle number plates at a toll
Match with: Computer Vision · Natural Language Processing · Statistical Data3. The attendance camera was trained and tested only in September. The mistake started at which stage?
- ○ Deployment
- ○ Modelling
- ○ Data acquisition
- ○ Problem scoping
4. A system can belong to more than one AI domain at once.
- ○ True
- ○ False
5. The stage in which a model is tested on data it has never seen is called ______.
Remember
A failure shows up at the end of the cycle and starts near the beginning.
